Yamatoya Ramen (大和屋らあ麺)
We first find out about Davis's passion in the final episode of Digimon Adventure 02 where everybody shares their dreams for the future. Davis mentions that he loves ramen and wants to become the world's best ramen maker. He just loves the idea of making ramen for others to make them happy with good food.
Takashi: Then, what’s your dream?
Davis: Mine? Mine’s a ramen shop. I love ramen! I’ll become the world’s best ramen maker!
Ken: I had no idea…*
In the final scene of Digimon Adventure 02, after a few years have passed, we can see that Davis actually opened his noodle cart and found great worldwide success. We can also see his picture on the cover of Time magazine together with V-mon.
Since they created two more movies between the final scene and Adventure 02, we can see Davis's first steps toward the noodle cart future. In Last Evolution Kizuna, he is still in school to become a certified chef and is trying to gain some experience. He wants to travel around the country and the world to try as many ramen as he can to learn more about the food. In the movie, he also goes to New York with his 02 friends to research a new kind of ramen free of preconceived ideas.
In the second movie, The Beginning, we see that he has already become a certified chef and is currently working in a ramen shop. In the audio drama Daisuke’s First Step! The Motomiya Noodle Shop Opens for Business, Davis's boss suggests that Davis use or rent his restaurant during off-hours—like at night, in the mornings, or during holidays. Davis decides to take the offer and starts his business one day per week. He names his business Yamatoya Ramen, a name seen in the movie, dedicated to Akatsuki Yamatoya, the writer for both Last Evolution Kizuna and The Beginning. And that's how Davis starts his own ramen business.
V-mon: Boss! You’ll really give him the shop?!
Boss: I’m not giving him the shop, I’m just letting him borrow it on a temporary basis. So what we could do is have Daisuke run the shop during its off-hours.
V-mon: Off…hours?
Boss: You could do late night or early morning, but why don’t you start with our regular weekly day off?
V-mon: Only one day a week?!
Davis: Oh, you dummy! One day a week is more than enough to start with! I can get used to how everything works without having to pay the start-up fees! And most importantly, I get to actually have people try my ramen!
Boss: And you’ll get to store up funds, so you’ll kill three birds with one stone! Oh, but make sure you pay the utility bills for what you use. Hahahaha!
Davis: Thanks so much, Boss!
Boss: Sure. So what about the store name? Have you decided on one yet?
Davis: Well, of course!
Davis: And that’s how I started using Yamatoya5 Ramen on a temporary basis. The first step on my road to business independence started here!
Davis: All right, V-mon! Motomiya Ramen opens for business today!
V-mon: Yeah! We’ll give it everything we’ve got!*
In the movie, we can see that the ramen shop he is working at is indeed named Yamatoya Ramen, as mentioned in the audio drama. The design is pretty nice, and it looks cozy and clean. I would eat there for sure. I tried to find the location of the ramen shop by looking through pretty much all the ramen shops in Tokyo but couldn't find the identical one—just some similarities with others. But I'm pretty sure it exists somewhere; I'll keep an eye on it. There is also a scene at the beginning of the movie where Davis is shown at home, and the next scene is him running towards the ramen shop. He runs on Nakano-dori Avenue away from Nakano Station, so I was wondering if he lives somewhere in Nakano and is shown on the street because he lives close to the shop. Or maybe he just came to Nakano via train and is running away from Nakano Station, and the ramen place is located somewhere in Nakano. Either way, I think there is a connection between Nakano and the Yamatoya Ramen shop.
And thanks to the Digi-Lab for all the audio drama translations. Go check it out; it's amazing.
